I stole this post

I stole this from my friend Blake's blog. Don't bother visiting that, he posts less than I do. What he wrote the one time that he posted was real though, and I feel the same way.
Here ya go

Here's what I want to do with my life:
I want to be in the ministry, not in the pretentious way that we all see but a real way. A way that involves community, and an understanding of who Jesus really was, and what he wanted us to do with our lives.

I want to teach/learn about the way Jesus wanted us to live; not the "christian" way that we see today. The way with love, where we attempt to love each other the way God loves us, with forgiveness, and the want to further each others love and relationship.

Who I am:
A critical, judging human who only has any hope because a man named Jesus gave his life for me. I'm a man who tries more and more to live my life with love, compassion, and un selfishness. I'm also a man who sees more and more at how I fail with this.

I want to be a part of something greater than myself, a part of something that I know God has intended for me. Affecting everyday relationships, and learning myself what it is to serve.

Cynicism

I know that I am cynical mainly of large organizations, a church or government for example, when I feel they have lost the original vision that they set out to accomplish, or use certain mission statements to draw in believers/followers/voters, only to have some sort of twist so they don’t actually do/deliver what they seem to promise.

After self examination, I usually see that the reason I am so harsh towards the organizations, is to bring the attention off of my lack of follow through with my own visions and goals.

I know that cynicism is not the answer, but I normally don’t see myself doing it until I have already committed the crime. I have a wife and strong friend base that has started calling me out when they see my cynicism creeping in, and that definitely helps.

If I post something that sounds like I could be acting cynical, feel free to let me know, I am tired of being that kind of person.

LOVE
It beats hate.
And cynicism.

Bicycles

I have a group of friends that meet every Monday at each others houses, we call the meetings Community, with the central theme that if we are truly going to live out lives as Christians, we need to be a community of believers who learn to love others as Christ together, as well as being there for each other.

However, this post isn't about Community. It's about an idea that two guys that attend came up with. We live in a town where homelessness is kind of an in between subject. The town is big enough to have homeless, but doesn't really have an excess of support. Most people who have fallen on hard times will generally find a way to a nearby city that have better programs to help get them back on their feet. It's not that our town neglets anyone in this position, it just hard to find a way to serve a "homeless person" when there really aren't that many around. Now those in our community have been brainstorming for quite a while, trying to figure out ways to serve, without just driving around until we see someone walking in the cold and stopping to help. This approach isn't always affective, and could also at some times could be offending, because not everyone walking needs a helping hand.

That's why I believe this idea my two friends came up with just might work. Most of us who work in town look out the windows throughout the day and notice those who walk, who rides bikes, and who catches rides from others. My friends, who like biking, decided they would start rebuilding bikes, and giving them to people around the community who look like they could use one. We are wanting to get some flyers out showing what they are doing, so that if people know of someone who could use a bike, they could contact my friends, and hook their friend up with a sweet ride.

Right now they are in a very beginners stage, not having many bikes. They are working on getting quit a few from a retired bike shop owner from out of town, as well as donations for buying parts, riding equipment, locks, etc. That's where you come in. Do you know anyone who rides, that might get new equipment every six months? Maybe you have a bike but live somewhere where it isn't very useful to ride one. Maybe you make enough money that buying a bike for someone wouldn't really hurt your wallet.

Let me know anyway you can help, my email is communityinchrist@live.com. Tweet the link to this site, email it to your friends.

As a community we can do something. I really believe we will.

A Challenge

I have a challenge for myself. I am going to celebrate the birth and resurrection of Christ the entire year of 2010, not just the months of March and December.

There are the obvious pros of having Christian holidays, but there is also the not so obvious cons of them. One example of a con is the fact that it crams most of the focus of these AMAZING events into two three or four week periods. I know no one really thinks so, but maybe that gives us the excuse that "we've covered this story for the year, now we can talk about other stuff." When was the last time you heard a sermon on the birth of Christ in August?

Also, any holiday is going to have decorations, themes, Santa...Peter Cottontail. These things aren't bad, but sure can get in the way.

This is just a challenge in my life, because I know I am guilty of being too worried about the holidays, and only thinking about the meaning of those holidays when they occur. I believe Jesus is bigger than a Sunday in the spring and a family filled week in December. I am just letting people know my feelings. Perhaps you've felt this way before ,and want to celebrate year round with me.

A Birth. Something more than yearly presents under a tree

I think it’s important to remember that God chose
to send His son to this imperfect and sinful world.
That God joins us, through Jesus,
in the midst of our suffering, our problems, our hurts.
Jesus was born into a life just like ours and for
most of us way worse.
And He invites us to take part in true life with Him;
to repent and to believe; and be saved.
That is the good news of Jesus;
That is The Gospel.

Grace - The Unearned Gift

I have come to realize something, something I have known my whole life, but never believed. Grace is totally free; God's love is completely free. I know that I have been taught this since I was a boy, but I guess I just missed it.

Acts 15
"10Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? 11No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."

I know that I have read this before, and have heard sermons over it, but I always remember the points of those messages turning to your actions. It was almost like I always heard "yesjesuslovesyounomatterwhat, NOW, YOU HAVE TO LIVE THE LIFE!" The grace part of the message was just the intro, and the works part ruled the rest.

In the passage of Acts, Peter is talking to a group of people who belonged to party of the Pharisees, responding to a statement they had made.
5Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, "The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the Law of Moses."
God had given the Gentiles the gift of the Holy Spirit, He had showed that they were accepted. The followers of the Pharisees immediately go into "action" mode. In there minds, the Gentiles cannot be accepted by God unless they go through the rituals and "actions" required by the law. Just accepting God's grace and love, which is theirs whether they want it or not, is not enough for the Pharisees, they have to earn it. They've heard Peter talk about grace, they know the message, yet they still insist on "putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear."
Which brings me to the current church, I think we still believe like the Pharisees. We preach and proclaim grace, but don't have the faith to live under it. I would like to hear a sermon about grace, and not hear one thing that we have to do, except accept it. Wouldn't that be beautiful?

I heard a song last night. It's by John Mark Mcmillan and called How He Loves. It is so beautiful.

Part of the lyrics are
We are his portion
And he is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in his eyes
If grace is an ocean we're all sinking

While listening to that last night with my eyes closed, I just started smiling, I couldn't help it. I was just thinking about how before I could even make a decision to do something to earn his love, he loved me, and know matter what I do, he still loves me. It truly is unconditional.
